The Clean Hydrogen Partnership (Joint Undertaking), a key EU partnership under Horizon Europe, is accelerating Europe’s push towards a sustainable hydrogen economy. The 2024 Programme Review Report outlines its accomplishments, ongoing projects, and strategic plans across eight pillars, supporting the EU’s ambitious climate targets for 2030 and 2050.
The Clean Hydrogen Partnership (JU), under the Horizon Europe program, plays a pivotal role in advancing the EU’s hydrogen strategy. By fostering innovation across production, storage, and application areas, the partnership supports the EU’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In 2024, the partnership continued its legacy, driving research in renewable hydrogen production, enhancing fuel cell technologies, and expanding hydrogen’s applications in sectors like transport, power, and industrial use, shows the recent Programme Review Report prepared by the JRC for the Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
This year’s report highlights major achievements, such as advancements in hydrogen electrolysis efficiency, increased durability of solid oxide electrolysers, and efforts to scale hydrogen technologies to meet industrial demands. Projects also focused on hydrogen storage solutions, including underground storage and transport via pipelines, aiming to strengthen a future European hydrogen network. Additionally, the hydrogen "valleys" initiative, which connects local ecosystems for hydrogen production and use, saw a boost with added funding to expand these hubs across Europe.
The Clean Hydrogen Partnership has strengthened Europe’s position as a leader in hydrogen technology, especially in electrolysers, hydrogen refuelling stations, and megawatt-scale fuel cells. However, barriers remain, particularly in regulatory frameworks and project financing. The JU’s continuous collaboration with stakeholders, regulators, and the public is key to unlocking hydrogen’s full potential, driving Europe’s transition to a net-zero economy, and positioning the EU at the forefront of the global hydrogen landscape.
As the Clean Hydrogen JU heads toward its goal of building a comprehensive European hydrogen infrastructure, it remains focused on creating innovative technologies, establishing regulatory pathways, and addressing market challenges. By fostering cooperation between industries, research institutions, and governments, the Clean Hydrogen JU is actively shaping a sustainable hydrogen future for Europe.
The key pillars presented in the Programme Review Report will be topic of several sessions at the Innovation Forum 2024, taking place on 19-21 November during the European Hydrogen Week. Register here to join us and find more about the JU’s achievements.
