On 15.09.2020, the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Observatory (FCHO) online launch event took place with around 1000 participants from European and national institutions, industry and associations from around the world.

The Fuel Cell Hydrogen Observatory (FCHO) provides data and up to date information about the entire hydrogen sector. It focuses on technology and market statistics, socio-economic indicators, policy and regulation, as well as financial support.

Fuel cells and hydrogen technologies are now seen as a firm part of public strategies to drive the climate-neutral revolution envisaged in the European Green Deal and to decarbonise the economy. The arising interest in fuel cells and hydrogen technologies requested filling knowledge gaps and providing analysis covering the entire value chain. The FCHO provides rich synthesis and data interpretation of all hydrogen industry and it is designed to engage directly with policy-makers and experts, industry players and investors, as well as the general public.

The project collects data from primary sources to the utmost and presents them in an accessible and practical way for the further use of a large audience. Data collected through the Observatory will be used to produce and disseminate on a regular basis digestible analytical reports to make annual comparisons assessing market progress and identify strengths and trends in the fuel cells and hydrogen sector.

The FCHO has been commissioned for the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH 2 JU) under a public procurement contract. The FCHO consortium partners include the following organisations: E4Tech, Hydrogen Europe, HGF, NEN, Hydrogen Europe Research, Innovation Loop, and Inycom.
The Observatory is available at www.fchobservatory.eu and all FCHO related updates will be also shared via its Twitter and LinkedIn accounts.

Bart Biebuyck, Executive Director, Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) said: We are delighted to see the launch of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Observatory (FCHO). By providing data and fact-based information about hydrogen technologies in a single database, the FCHO brings an invaluable contribution to the whole sector. The FCHO fills an important gap as for the first time a tool has been made available that allows to track in a coordinated way the effective deployment of FCH technologies, their market penetration, as well as the existing policy framework. We will continue working hard to ensure that the Observatory scope continues to grow.

David Hart, E4tech Director, added E4tech is pleased to lead an expert consortium in the development of the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Observatory. At such a pivotal time for the industry, it has never been more important for policy makers, other stakeholders and the general public to be able to access accurate information around the current status of market development, the impact of policy and the overall progress of the sector. We look forward to seeing the Observatory grow to become an invaluable resource for all fuel cell and hydrogen stakeholders.

Nicolas Brahy, Hydrogen Europe Director also commented: As the hydrogen sector grows, so does the need for fact-based knowledge and data. As the leading association of the sector, Hydrogen Europe is delighted to be part of the Observatory and help collect, analyse and publish data for the use of not only the fuel cells and hydrogen stakeholders but also for the general public. The Observatory will show that FCH technologies are no longer just laboratory technologies, but they are beginning to be part of everyday’ s lives of Europeans (and beyond). We will work hard to make the Observatory a trusted reference point for facts, figures and analysis of data relevant to our industry.
