Kick-Off FLHyPorts – Connecting Flanders' Ports into Belgium's First Hydrogen Valley

  • 13 July 2026

On 11 June 2026, the FLHyPorts consortium officially launched the project at the iconic Port House in Antwerp.

FLHyPorts (Flanders Hydrogen Ports Valley) aims to establish Belgium's first Hydrogen Valley by connecting hydrogen production, distribution and end-use applications across the Flemish port ecosystem.

At the heart of the project is Hyoffwind, a 25 MW renewable hydrogen electrolysis facility under construction by Virya Energy, Messer Benelux and HyoffGreen. The plant will produce RFNBO-compliant renewable hydrogen for mobility and industrial applications.

FLHyPorts will demonstrate how hydrogen can help decarbonise logistics, port operations, inland shipping, industry and mobility, while also providing flexibility services to the electricity and natural gas grids.

The three major Flemish ports—Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Haven Oostende and North Sea Port—play a central role in hydrogen production, distribution and use. Together with industrial partners Virya Energy and Messer Benelux, the project will support hydrogen deployment across mobility, industry, shipping, port equipment, energy integration and inland waterway transport.

Supported by a broad consortium of industry, infrastructure, research and public partners, FLHyPorts aims by 2030 to:

  • Enable more than 1,800 tonnes of annual green hydrogen consumption
  • Advance key European hydrogen technologies to TRL 8
  • Train 500 hydrogen professionals
  • Deliver a certified RFNBO tracing system
  • Develop a practical replication toolkit to accelerate Hydrogen Valley deployment across Europe
