Alkaline ELectrolysis - Innovative materials and Operating Systems to boost efficiency and durability under dynamic operation

  • Project
The AELIOS project is focused on designing a robust and sustainable Alkaline Electrolyser with improved efficiency, capable of operating flexibly in conjunction with renewable energy sources, while also lowering both CAPEX and OPEX. To reach this goal, the project will address multiple key areas: the development of advanced materials for the stack and balance of plant (BoP) components, the implementation of innovative operational strategies, the creation of new lifetime modelling tools, the definition of accelerated ageing and degradation testing protocols, and the investigation on the sustainability, circularity and recyclability of the innovative materials and components. Highly efficient 3-D structured electrodeposited Ni based electrodes, compact and well adherent BPPs coatings, and novel operation strategies will enable overall stack performance of 1A/cm2 at 48 kWh/kg efficiency at system level. Elongated durability of the electrodes, BPPs and BoPs, will allow to reduced components degradation below 0.10%/2000 h.
The best performing components and strategies developed and tested during the project will be incorporated in the final AELIOS stack prototype, which will be tested under relevant conditions, including steady state operation and operation under variable loads, targeting 3000h.
Overall, the AELIOS project seeks to contribute significantly to achieving the net-zero CO2 target by 2030, fostering a sustainable and clean-energy future.
