| PEMFCs are expected to increase their share of the transport market over the next years, but to do so MEA manufacturing processes and technologies must become more reliable, efficient and faster to allow lower cost. Therefore, it is key to implement advanced manufacturing techniques for catalyst coated components, which will enable lower raw materials consumption, lesser cost and reduced waste by applying innovative printing and coating techniques. Although low-volume batch processes have transitioned to roll-to-roll production lines, there is still a need for higher line speeds and yields, since the main materials are all relatively expensive (membrane, ionomer, PGM-based catalysts). In addition, conventional CCMs usually do not allow an easy recyclability, therefore generating the need of new industrial processes. CENTREPIECE will, 1) upscale and validate with up-to-date CCM materials using innovative coating techniques developed in previous projects, with the objective of making them suitable for large-scale production [TRL6] 2) Develop and validate In-line Quality Control techniques against ex-situ and off-line data [TRL6] 3) integrate project developments into a prototype pilot line capable of 2400 m2/year at a line speed >10m/min [MRL5] 4) Revolutionary digital coating and laser drying technology will also be assessed. MEAs will be manufactured full size (280 cm2 active area) and benchmarked against conventionally manufactured, showcasing the ability of the line to meet industrial needs, whilst decreasing the scrap-rate below 5% and increasing the yield to >90%. CENTREPIECE will build on the developments from previous projects (MAMA-MEA, CAMELOT, VOLUMETRIQ, INSPIRE, IMMORTAL, HIGHLANDER, etc.). Innovative techniques, together with in-line QC processes will allow high speed manufacturing and will therefore provide the necessary capacity to meet forecasted demand. |
