Clean Hydrogen JU Awards 2022 - Shortlisted projects innovations

1.   Letting hydrogen do the heavy lifiting

Project: H2Ports

The Port of Valencia has become the first in Europe to test two prototype hydrogen-powered vehicles to move cargo and shipping containers. A mobile hydrogen refuelling station is being used to fuel them. Two years of rigourous use in real conditions will help improve the technology and contribute to the decarbonisation of Europe’s maritime sector.

2.    Next generation sustainable transport takes off

Project: HEAVEN

In a first for aviation, a high-power-density fuel cell fed with liquid hydrogen is being designed and integrated into an existing four-seater aircraft. A cryogenic hydrogen storage tank is being flight-tested, to demonstrate the safe onboard storage of up to 20 kg of H2 at -250 degrees Celsius, laying the foundation for zero-emission regional commuter aircraft capable of flying up to 2 000 km.

3.    The natural solution to transporting hydrogen gas

Transporting mixtures of hydrogen and natural gas in existing infrastructure can help reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to Europe’s energy independence. A membrane technology-based system to separate mixtures of these gases enables the hydrogen to be  re-extracted and allows for the gas quality to be adjusted to the needs of users.

4.    Fuelling industry’s need for hydrogen

A 2.4 megawatt high-temperature electrolyser powered with ‘green’ electricity is being developed and integrated into a biofuels refinery in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The electrolyser is heated to 850 degrees Celsius with steam from the refinery, ensuring hydrogen production at 85 % electrical efficiency. The innovation is leading the way in meeting demand for hydrogen by energy-intensive industries.

5.    The secret to success is in the membrane

Anion exchange membrane water electrolysers (AEMWE) combine the best features of alkaline and polymer electrolyte water electrolysers. A 2 kW five-cell prototype has a membrane that is thinner, stronger and has higher conductivity than what is currently available, which is set to make it the most efficient and cost-competitive AEMWE.

6.    Hydrogen or electricity at the flick of a switch

A reversible solid oxide cell can operate in electrolysis mode to produce hydrogen, or in fuel cell mode to produce electricity and heat. The two modes are being integrated in a prototype designed for hydrogen refuelling stations. The system can be scaled up to meet greater demand for hydrogen or power in industry and transport.

7.    Towards easier design and integration of fuel cell systems

Fuel cells require specialised knowledge to integrate into existing systems – for use in vehicles or for large scale power production. An open-source software and hardware platform is helping engineers to more easily and affordably design and simulate hybrid fuel cell and battery systems, ensuring faster market uptake of cleaner hydrogen technology.
