Interested in Hydrogen Safety?

Check below the latest updates from the European Hydrogen Safety Panel (EHSP) and the European Hydrogen Incidents and Accidents Database (HIAD 2.0).

Hydrogen Safety

To bring the benefits of hydrogen to society, hydrogen technologies must be safely developed and used across a variety of applications and sectors.

Launched in 2017, the European Hydrogen Safety Panel (EHSP) is assisting the JU in assuring that hydrogen safety is adequately managed both at programme and at project level, and in promoting and disseminating a hydrogen safety culture within and beyond the JU Programme.

You can find below the latest information, covering new guidance documents, the presentations of a webinar on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for hydrogen safety analysis and an update on the HIAD 2.0 database.

Guidance document for Safety Planning and Management in EU hydrogen and fuel cell projects

The European Hydrogen Safety Panel (EHSP) has published a new guidance document for the Safety Planning and Management in EU hydrogen and fuel cell projects. Building on the safety planning guidance document published in 2021, the new document provides further information on safety planning, monitoring, and reporting for hydrogen and fuel cell projects in Europe. It helps EU projects to incorporate state-of-the-art hydrogen safety by integrating safety learnings, expertise and planning.

Guidance document on Hydrogen Safety Engineering

The European Hydrogen Safety Panel (EHSP) has published a new guidance document on Hydrogen Safety Engineering. The document provides a comprehensive list of phenomenological models, risk assessment approaches, and CFD models for hydrogen safety engineering applications developed in the JU projects and elsewhere by the international hydrogen safety community. The document is designed to take the readers through the most basic elements of consequence analysis to the consideration of prevention and mitigation measures as well as regulations, codes, and standards relevant to hydrogen.

HIAD 2.0 update and continuation

“The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and the Clean Hydrogen JU have reached an agreement to revamp the European online reference database on hydrogen safety, the Hydrogen Incidents and Accidents Database (HIAD 2.0).

Since 2017, the JU has been collaborating with the JRC through the activities of the European Hydrogen Safety Panel to increase the number and the quality of the events contained in the database, and from their assessment, derive lessons learned and recommendations. However, since 2020, the database was moved offline due to security measures. Thanks to the agreement reached, the revamped online version of the database (referred to as HIAD 3.0) will be hosted within the European Clean Hydrogen Knowledge Hub, a single online platform that will encompass and enrich the available tools/platforms maintained by the JU, facilitating access to non-confidential information to its members and the wider public.”
