These success stories show how European collaboration between research, industry and policy makers delivers innovation and accelerates the transition to a greener world.  

1. Powering industry with solid oxide electrolyser technology

Producing green hydrogen in sufficient volumes to replace coal and other polluting energy sources is essential to help decarbonise Europe’s hard-to-abate sectors. Projects funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership are demonstrating the flexibility and scalability of solid oxide cell technology to make this clean energy carrier.

2. Hydrogen: a vital element in decarbonising the gas grid

Decarbonisation of the natural gas grid is a key element in the EU’s efforts to achieve climate change targets. To reduce CO2 emissions, several Clean Hydrogen Partnership projects are paving the way for green hydrogen to be blended with natural gas and transported using existing infrastructure.

3. Cleaner, quieter hydrogen-powered transport takes to the road

Electric vehicles powered by green hydrogen can contribute to meeting climate goals and making Europe’s cities more liveable. Several Clean Hydrogen Partnership projects are putting fuel cell electric cars, buses and taxis on the road, along with hydrogen refuelling stations, to develop the market for cleaner, quieter public transport.

4. The shift to gigawatt-scale fuel cell manufacturing

Increasing fuel cell production is vital to the large-scale deployment of hydrogen technology. The MAMA MEA project, backed by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, developed innovative manufacturing techniques to lower costs and scale up production to help meet an anticipated surge in demand for fuel cells from 2025.

5. The next step for fuel cell membrane technology

The Clean Hydrogen Partnership-funded GAIA project developed advanced fuel cell components that satisfy stringent durability and performance requirements. This will take the technology closer to commercial deployment and contribute to decarbonising the transport sector.

6. Building a safe hydrogen economy

The Clean Hydrogen Partnership is funding projects that promote the safe development and use of fuel cell and hydrogen technology and supporting the work of the European Hydrogen Safety Panel. This is ensuring consumer confidence in, and market uptake of, fuel cell and hydrogen technology.
