JIVE2: Barcelona releases tender for 8 hydrogen buses

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) is also relying on hydrogen as part of the conversion of its bus fleet. After TMB had ordered a total of 23 articulated battery buses from Solaris and Irizar in February, a tender for the purchase of the first hydrogen buses has now been launched.

Hycare-hydrogen CArrier for Renewable Energy Storage (HyCARE-Hydrogen CArrier for Renewable Energy Storage)

The project is aimed at developing a HyCARE hydrogen storage tank in solid form on a large scale. The reservoir will be based on an innovative concept, which links the storage of hydrogen and accumulation of heat to improve energy efficiency and reduce the footprint of the whole system.

Global collaboration platform created for most advanced hydrogen projects

Mission Innovation IC8, in cooperation with the European Commission and its Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU), Roland Berger, and Inycom, is building a global collaboration and information sharing platform for flagship hydrogen projects to enable global learning and push the development of integrated, large scale hydrogen initiatives forward. By promoting the emergence and implementation of hydrogen projects, as well as raising awareness among policy makers, the platform aims to ultimately facilitate the clean energy transition.

FCH JU: the success story of European Commission working in partnership with the industry on Research and Innovation

FCH JU was created in 2008 as an Institutionalised Public-Private partnership and since then has delivered clear impact on implementing optimal research and innovation activities on hydrogen, to the point of market readiness:

  • 262 R&I projects for an EU funding of approx. 978 million EURO
  • 969 beneficiaries from 40 countries, including 269 SMEs
  • over 92 European Regions and Cities committed to hydrogen solutions
  • 11 European Regions benefiting from Project Development Assistance
  • two Hydrogen territories: Orkney Island, Scotland and Hydrogen Valley in the Northern-Netherlands

Electrolysers technology field-validation:

  • 20 MW alkaline in Groeningen, the Netherlands (chemical industry)
  • 6 MW PEM at Voestalpine Linz steel plant in Austria
  • 10 MW PEM at Shell refinery in Cologne, Germany
  • 6 MW Solide-Oxide in a renewable biofuel refinery in Rotterdam

Cars and buses large-scale demonstration:

  • over 2,000 light-vehicles under deployment (more than 840 in operation in 2019)
  • over 300 buses under deployment in 10 European cities (more than 54 in operation in 2019)
  • overall more than 18 million Km driven already with an accumulated over 500 tonnes of H2

Hydrogen Refuelling Infrastructure (HRS):

  • 101 HRS under deployment in 10 European countries (64 already deployed)
  • 3 tonnes of H2 in 18 600 refuelling operations (HRS availability of 96%)
  • HRS availability system[1] contains 141 hydrogen-refuelling stations connected and sending live data

Heat and Power applications:

  • over 2,000 fuel cell m-CHPs installed and more than 700 units in physical commissioning at the end of 2019
  • CAPEX of <10,000 €/kW of new generation of products and average lifetime of 12.3 years at efficiencies of up to 60% el and 40 % th
  • 120 kWe SOFC at waste-water treatment plant in Torino
  • 1 MW PEMFC system of CLEARgenDemo in Martinique
  • 2 MW PEMFC system of DEMCOPEM in China

Pre-normative Research for standards:

  • 3 European laboratories setup to perform analysis on H2 purity according to international standards and fully capable of performing H2 fuel quality measurements.
