Near-silent buses shift around in a residential neighbourhood just a few kilometres away from Groningen, one of the greenest industrial areas in the world. We’re in 2026 and the Netherlands gives the world a preview of what a “hydrogen economy” could look like.
We discussed the topic with Bart Biebuyck , Executive director of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) and previously Technical Senior Manager at the Fuel Cell department of Toyota Motor Europe. FCH JU is public-private partnership supporting research, development and demonstration in the field of hydrogen technologies in Europe.
Small communities are becoming energy self-sufficient with clean-burning hydrogen gas generated from wind power. The question now for Europe is whether it can be replicated on a larger scale. In 2013, the Orkney Islands became a victim of their own success.
Europe is leading the way in developing the breakthrough technologies needed to realise hydrogen’s energy potential. With hydrogen-powered buses and taxis being used across major cities, we have demonstrated that the technology can be used on a large scale.
"Technological breakthroughs have put hydrogen firmly at the heart of the European Green Deal. What is sometimes missing is the big picture of its place in a smart low-carbon economy built on smart energy integration. Hydrogen valleys address this lack, offering insights into how the puzzle might fit together and meet communities’ needs.
